Now underway Italy's first course in Computer Ethics

Turin Polytechnic is the first university in our country to launch a course dedicated to the ethical implications of Information Technology
Sponsored by SIA-SSB, the course offers doctorate students the opportunity to further their knowledge regarding the link between technology and ethics, as already occurs in the most prestigious universities in the United States

Milan, 15 April 2008 - The Graduate school of Politecnico di Torino led by professor Mario Rasetti, announce s the first course in Italy in Computer Ethics, open to both Italian and foreign students.
The course, sponsored by SIA-SSB, is taught in English and last a total of 30 hours , offering a maximum of 6 credits.

Since 1991, Computer Ethics has spread far and wide as a subject in Information Technology and Engineering faculties around the world, initially in the United States and later in a number of European countries.
In Italy, Turin Polytechnic is the first university to offer a specially dedicated course in its training program. The classes are given by Norberto Patrignani, head of the Ethics & Information Technology department at the Politeia Study Centre in Milan.

The course is a response to the increasing demand, especially in the engineering field, to train complete professionals with the skills - also from a humanistic viewpoint - necessary to evaluate the social and ethical consequences of IT correctly.

The course will discuss and analyze the main issues linked to the spread of Information Technology in society, with a particular focus on the ethic implications concerning both the development and use of technology and the critical problems arising from the improper use of computers.

For some years now, SIA-SSB has been promoting a new corporate culture in the Italian Information Technology sector. The first step was the organization of a series of meetings with world-renowned experts in the fields of Business Ethics and Computer Ethics (among them Richard T. De George, Philosophy Professor and Co-Director of the International Center for Ethics in Business at Kansas University), followed by publications entirely dedicated to this subject, with the objective of raising the awareness of business leaders to the ethical issues that are emerging as the consequences of technological progress.
