Milan, 15 January 2018 – There were 59.3 million payments using debit, credit and prepaid cards, issued in Italy and managed by SIA, in the first week of the 2018 winter sales (from Friday 5 to Saturday 13 January), compared to the 52.3 million in the same period last year (+13.4%); of these around 12 million related to online purchases, amounting to over 20% of the total, up by 23.1% over 2017 when they were 9.7 million.
In traditional stores, payments with cards increased by 11.3%, this year reaching 47.4 million over the 42.6 million of 2017.

In particular, the highest number of physical payments (over 7 million) was recorded on Friday 5 January 2018, the day which saw the end-of-season sales get under way all over Italy, while the peak in purchases on e-commerce sites (nearly 1.5 million) occurred on Tuesday 9 January.

SIA processes approximately half of all payment transactions made using debit, credit and prepaid cards in Italy.
