SIA 3-D Secure is fully compliant with the internet authentication standard developed by the major card schemes.
3-D Secure is a way of authenticating transactions where the Cardholder is Not Present (CNP) and Chip and PIN transactions cannot take place because the purchases are made online. Issuers in fact need a means to verify that the person making an e-commerce payment is an authorised cardholder. The verification process is called payment authentication.
3-D Secure authentication requires cardholders to register their card to take advantage of this service.
This is a one time process which takes place on the card issuer’s website and involves the cardholder answering several security questions to which only the card issuer and cardholder will know the answer. The cardholder selects a password and agrees on a secret phrase, which will be used by the card issuer during each online transaction. Cardholders can easily become as familiar with this service as when they enter their PIN number at a cash machine.
The 3-D Secure technology will reduce the possibility of fraudulent card use by authenticating the cardholder at the actual time of the transaction and subsequently reducing the exposure to disputed transactions and chargebacks of this type.
- protection from unauthorised card use
- opportunity to leverage existing cardholder authentication techniques such as those used for the online banking services
- reducing the number of fraudulent chargebacks which represent the highest proportion in the internet environment
- opportunity to increase sales and decrease disputed transactions.
